De Tweede Wereldoorlog met name laat blijvende sporen achter, waardoor Amster dam haar leidinggevende positie als diamantcentrum moet prijsgeven.
Desondanks ontwikkelt de Amsterdamse Diamantbeurs zich tot wat ze nu is; de bakermat van de georganiseerde diamant-handel.
Ter gelegenheid van dit bijzondere kroon-jaar stelde Simone Lipschitz de bewogen geschiedenis van de Diamantbeurs te boek en sprak met veel oude en nieuwe beurs-medewerkers en -leden.
Zij was een van de kinderen, die hun vader tot 's avonds laat diamant heeft zien sorte-ren. Van beroep schilderes en illustratrice, liet zij zich inspireren door de sfeer en de mensen van de beurs. Zo ontstonden de tekeningen voor het boek.
'De Amsterdamse Diamantbeurs' verhaalt van de eeuwenoude tradities, de sterke onderlinge banden tussen de beursleden en de heel typerende eigen sfeer van de diamantwereld. Diamant én Amsterdam: een twee-eenheid.
One hundred years ago, in September 1890, the Diamond Exchange Association officially came into being. The very first diamond exchange in the world became a fact. We celebrate the centenary with the production of this unique book. It tells not simply the story of a building, but the intricacies of men's lives, blending the facts of history with personal recollections.
Despite the suffering and turbulence of the past decades, the Amsterdam Diamond Exchange has maintained the position it once created as diamond centre of the world.
The book is written by Simone Lipschitz, herself from a diamond worker's family. She was one of the children who, deep into the night, watched her father sorting diamonds. She is a professional illustrator and painter, and has provided the book with drawings illustrating - with exceptional warmth and insight- the distinctive atmosphere of the old Diamond Exchange.
