= Very rae trade-catalogue for laces and embroideries manufactured in China, often for the western market. The Chefoo lace industry was one of the major centers of Chinese lacemaking, alongside others in Shandong, Shanghai, and Shantou. The British opened Chefoo as a treaty port in 1862 and James McMullan and his wife founded a Christian mission there in 1895. The object of the mission was the evangelization of the Chinese, and building up the self-supporting Church of Christ in China. Mrs McMullan opened an Industrial Mission School, in which the pupils gave part of their time to making lace, while her husband an export business for the lace and other local products. The industry thrived in the early 20th century, especially around 1880-1920. Local workers, particularly women, were trained in European techniques to produce high-quality handmade lace, including bobbin lace. Textile maunfacture is indigenous to China, therefore the Chinese quickly become familar with lace making and were successful in its trade. Chefoo lace was exported globally and gained recognition, such as winning a Gold Medal at the 1904 St. Louis Exhibition. Lacking two larger samples on one leaf. Wrappers sunfaded.
