In 1962 it was estimated that more than five million people in the United States were mentally retarded. Only cancer, heart disease, arthritis, and mental illness afflict a greater number of people.
With present techniques it is impossible to diagnose in more than about one-fifth of all cases the precise cause of mental retardation. For the majority-those usually classified as mildly retarded-there is no demonstrable pathology in the brain. Most of these are not institutionalized but constitute a great strain on family and community resources.
Here, for parents, teachers, physicians, psychologists, sociologists, and others responsible for the mentally retarded, is a comprehensive review of current research. Pointing to many avenues of possible future investigation, it will serve for years as a reference work in research.
Harvey A. Stevens is superintendent of the Central Wisconsin Colony and Training School, Madison, Wisconsin.
Rick Heber is professor in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin.
