It has been said of the fourteenth century that ‘no epoch was more naturally mad’. On the one hand it was the age of chivalry and princely splendour, of Gothic cathedrals, of superbly illuminated chronicles and Books of Hours; on the other it was an age of chaos and ferocity, of social disruption, collapsing assumptions and cult of death. In this marvellously readable book Barbara Tuchman, author of August 1914 and The Proud Tower, has recaptured as in ‘a distant mirror’ the Europe of six hundred years ago when the world seemed to be spinning to its doom.
These are the years when the Black Death struck four times, accounting, by the end of the century, for nearly half the population between India and Iceland; when the Hundred Years War between England and France was an epic of brutality and bravery chequered by disgrace; when freebooting companies of brigands terrorized Europe, destroying whatever plague and famine had passed by; when the ideals of chivalry were crumbling under the impact of new weapons, new tactics and knightly folly; when Papal Schism rent the Christian world, with Pope and anti-Pope excommunicating each other’s followers.
Yet it was also the time of Chaucer and Petrarch, the Decameron, Froissart and Wyclif, of courtly romance and ribald tales, the Sorbonne and Oxford, tournaments and pageants; of richness and gusto in counterpoint to the Danse Macabre and the flagellants.
Mrs Tuchman shows us the texture of domestic life – what childhood and marriage were like, how money, taxes and war affected the lives of peasant, noble and clergy. She shows us beauty and treachery, battles, assassinations and the Peasants’ Revolt, demonology, satire and humour, saints and reformers, proud cardinals, beggars, bailiffs, Jews, innkeepers, feminists, riotous students, knights, wood-cutters, bankers, lawyers, mystics.
As the focus of her narrative, his life covering the crucial half-century following the onslaught of the plague, is the great baron Enguerrand de Coucy VII, ‘most experienced and skilful of all the knights of France’. We follow him through the continued on back flap

‘Dit boek gaat over de steden in het Westen, van de middeleeuwen tot de twintigste eeuw, met als uitgangspunt de vraag wie wat deed, waarom, waar en wanneer. Het onderwerp is zo uitgebreid dat ik heel selectief moest zijn. Ik heb mij beperkt tot de steden, die in hun eigen tijd werden erkend als van buitengewone kwaliteit, en daarom bezocht en nagebootst werden. Ik heb getracht deze met alle bijzonderheden te behandelen om een indruk te geven van hoe het leven was in, bijvoorbeeld, het vijftiende-eeuwse Brugge of in het Manchester van de negentiende eeuw.’
