Modern psychological theories of the relationships between parents and children are greatly influenced by ancient Greek ideology and by concepts of Far Eastern religions. An attempt is made in this study to base the psychology of family relationships on ideas of Biblical religion.
The study originated in the clinical observation that experiences of parent-child relationships characteristic of Jewish and Christian religion occur in every person. Some of these experiences have close connections with the Oedipus Complex. If they are, however, analysed from the standpoint of Biblical belief, which is the author's approach to psychology, they are seen to differ from the orthodox Oedipus experiences in important aspects. The study is thus a re-evaluation of the Oedipus Complex in the light of Biblical religion. The twenty-second chapter of Genesis, the Sacrifice of Isaac, is expounded for this purpose. It is known in Hebrew Literature as The Akedah, which means the binding of Isaac.
Theological commentaries, legends and works of art dealing with Akedah experiences are psychologically examined. The conclusion is drawn that Biblical ideas provide unique contributions to psychological truth.
