Editors’ Summary: Toward the objective of making group therapy more operational, the authors describe a transactional method, “Synallactic Collective Image Technique,” which actualizes psychodynamic concepts within the framework of General Systems Theory. Utilizing artistic creations made by members (free paintings, doodlings or scribblings), the participants choose, through majority vote, one creation around which discussion is organized. In this way, the members “talk” to each other through a common stimulus. Gradually, as different projections evolve, communalities are compared and a “collective image” of the group emerges which revolves around a central theme with individual variations. Throughout, the therapist operates actively in a key “catalytic regulatory” role, participating continuously in the group transaction. An example of the “synallactic” technique is provided by an interesting case illustration.
For more than ten years now the senior author has been working on the development of an approach which renders group therapy more operational, the Transactional Group Image Technique (Vassiliou, 1968), or, as he termed it recently in order to avoid the detrimental confusion of semantics around the term “transactional,” Synallactic Collective Image Technique.
The term “transaction” has been used in our work at the Athenian Institute of Anthropos as defined by Dewey and Bentley (1946) and introduced to psychiatry by Grinker, Spiegel, Shakow, Ruesch, etc. (Grinker, 1956). The definition is clear: “Essentially the concept is thing in process with thing,” according to Grinker.
By that it is obviously meant that when A transacts with B they both enter into a process according to which A changes B, while A at the same time is changed by B. This is a circular process where one cannot possibly talk about cause and effect. In previous and later years, though, the semantics of the term were blurred. The confusion around the term obliged us finally to use, instead of “transactional,” its Greek equivalent, “synallactic” (ΣΥΝΑΛΛΑΚΤΙΚΟΣ). Coming from the noun synallage
