Vele mensen leven graag in een stad en hopen hierin een thuis te kunnen vinden. Maar de manier waarop de meeste steden uitgegroeid is met dit gerechtvaardigd verlangen volkomen in tegenspraak. De provo’s signaleren dit, terwijl architecten, sociologen, psychologen, die met de stedebouwkunde te maken hebben, hierop vast lopen. De steden beginnen steeds meer te lijken op een mens die door kankergezwellen verteerd wordt: een geagglomereerd geheel, zonder hart, onherbergzaam, provocatie tot agressiviteit en onvrede. De harteloosheid en onherbergzaamheid, die de nieuwe bouwwijze scheppen, hebben echter wel een verontschuldiging waarop men zich kan beroepen: het taboe van de bezitsomstandigheden van stadsgronden, dat elke nieuwe, creatieve vormgeving onmogelijk maakt. Er is een verkeerde grondpolitiek en een geboren zucht naar winst, die helemaal geen oog hebben voor de harmonie van het geheel, voor een goede verhouding tussen stad en natuur, voor het ruimtescheppend element voor de individuele vrijheid van de mens. Het is geen wonder, dat de auteur dit pamflet cynisch opdraagt ‘aan de huiseigenaren, die met zoveel naïeve vlijt en geraffineerde sluwheid de doodsdrift van onze civilisatie dienen’.
De psychosomaticus Alexander Mitscherlich, geboren op 20 december 1908 te München, is professor aan de universiteit van Heidelberg en directeur van de psychosomatische universiteitskliniek in dezelfde stad. Zijn belangrijkste publicaties zijn: Wissenschaft ohne Menschlichkeit (1949), Widerstand und Einsicht (1950), Zur Psychologie der Toleranz (1951), Agression und Anpassung (1956), Pubertät und Tradition (1958), Auf dem Weg zur vaterlosen Gesellschaft (1963), Krankheit als Konflikt (1966).

Buildings have always been an expression of human sexuality. In this brilliant and provocative book, noted architecture critic and curator Aaron Betsky takes a look at the man-made world and concludes that it is just that: made by men and not women. The structure of buildings and the layout of cities in the modern world have almost always been determined by men, and the abstract and alien order of grids and columns that has resulted imprisons us in a way of living based on repression and, in some cases, oppression.
By contrast, it is women who create the interior spaces within these man-created environments. Comfortable, beautiful, seductive, and logical, these interiors act as areas of escape, self-definition, and sometimes even revelation.
Drawing on a wide range of architectural examples, from African mud huts to modern apartment complexes, Betsky explores what effects this division of architectural labor has had on our sensibilities and, indeed, on how we relate to one another as men and women. He believes that although it has always been thus, we do not have to live within this dichotomy between the exterior and the interior, the made and the lived, the masculine and the feminine, forever. It is possible, says Betsky, to create “spaces of liberation, spaces in which we can re-construct ourselves and our world.”
The best works of art and criticism expand our consciousness, our way of looking at the world. This is such a work: After reading it, you will never again look at a building, a park, a statue, a monument, and interior space in the same way.

“Why do I always feel out of place when I’m walking down the Champs-Élysées?” a woman asked me when I was waxing enthusiastic about the grandeur of Paris. “Because you are a woman,” I responded. The Champs-Élysées, I went on to explain, was designed by men. It represents their power. You might even say that it represents the body of a man. The street starts in front of a very large building (the Louvre) that has two legs reaching out to the street. At the center of each leg is a slightly higher portion that corresponds to the breast. It is rigid and symmetrical, muscular, and festooned with columns. The combination of the geometry, the phallic imagery, and the way in which the building looks like a man in granite armor is intimidating and is meant to be so.
The whole building dominates a large court. It sends out a long line that is the Champs-Élysées. It was constructed with little regard for what had been on the site; it was an erection, symbolized by the obelisk that stands at the beginning of the street.
Where the Champs-Élysées ends, it marks its triumph with an arch and a round plaza that sends out many smaller avenues like so many nearly identical but smaller children disseminated across the field of Paris.
