Enkele inleidende woorden.
'This collection of fourteen original essays by noted scholars from all over the world illuminates the nature of mind from the perspective of comparative psychology, both Eastern and Western.
Boht Buddhist and Western systems of psychology have much to learn from each other, in terms of theory as well as practice. The world cannot be arbitrarily divided into an East and a West in terms of what humans have to learn from each other about the human condition.
Thus "Buddhist and Western Psychology" presents the theories of Freud, Jung, and Bateson, among others, alongside Buddhist texts from the Pali, Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Japanese traditions. Some of the topics discus-
sed include emotions and therapy, concepts offend, the meaning of death defense mechanisms, te role of the "feminine", illusion and human suffering, and the experience of enlightenment.
Among the contributors are such pioneering scholars as Herbert. V. Guenther, Richard J. DeMarino, Padma-
siri de Silva, and Rune E.A. Johansson, all of whose works have been groundbreakers in the field of compa-
rative psychology.
Other contributors are Chögyam Trungpa, Gustavo Benavides, George Elder, Jan T. Ergardt, Steven Heine,
Stephen Kaplan, Nathan Katz, Akihisa Kondo, Peter Masefield, and Mokusen Miyuki.
The editor of the book, Nathan Katz, is assistant professor of Indo-Tibetan comparative religions at Williams College'.
