Prisma van de eufemismen
Wat te doen als je iets moet zeggen over een pijnlijk onderwerp, een teleurstellend resultaat of een delicate kwestie? Iets dus, waar je eigenlijk het liefst je mond over zou houden of wat je met een halve waarheid zou willen afdoen?
Uit zulke situaties kun je je redden met een welgekozen eufemisme; zo'n verhullend woord dat je met een zuinig mondje uitspreekt, met een gezicht alsof je zojuist in een citroen hebt gehapt.
Riemer Reinsma laat in dit boek een flink aantal eufemismen uit het Nederlands en andere talen de revue passeren. Ze zijn afkomstig uit de politiek, de economie en talloze andere levensterreinen. Veel eufemismen hebben te maken met erotiek, lichaamsfuncties en ziekten.
De nadruk is bij de selectie van de woorden gelegd op actuele eufemismen, zoals grenshospitium (meer een gevangenis dan een hotel!), concentratieschool (met hoog percentage ‘zwarte’ leerlingen) en contactzuinig (eenzaam).

Introduction
It wasn’t so long ago that a man was judged by his ability to swear and curse, and occasionally insult. In those days there was a rich vocabulary of invective and abuse from which our forefathers could select their own well-rounded phrases. Times have changed and most of that heritage has disappeared, leaving us with a few commonplace expletives and a string of four-letter words in its place. However, the need for that choice and range is as strong as it ever was, and it’s that need which this encyclopedia will answer.
Insults are part and parcel of our daily lives from the very moment we enter the world — and in many cases they’re the last things on our lips as we go out! Few of us have the self-control to avoid being insulting at some time or other, when our patience snaps, and fewer still are lucky enough to make it through life without being the objects of insults and insulting behaviour now and again. We all have our breaking point and most of us know only too well when we are approaching it.
However, instead of praising the virtues of bottling up our resentment, this book sets out to turn that gut reaction to positive advantage — our advantage. After all if you’re going to speak your mind, you might as well be articulate and say something worthwhile.
Most of us have been through the frustration of wanting to be able to deliver a stinging retort or simply silence an antagonist, but without having the right words to satisfy our needs. Well, here are the words and more situations than most of our needs will ever require.
In the following pages there are examples of insults great and small, wise and wonderful, created by and directed at the greatest malevolent wits the world has known. There are insults for all occasions. There are insults covering every black emotion. There are insults for the sharpest tongue, and there are insults which don’t require any verbal gift at all.
And alongside the many examples and illustrations of the great and famous, there are sample lines (marked by asterisks) to act as useful guidelines as we build up our own vocabulary of vinegary repartee. These are included to help us get started along the right lines and to get some of the bitter juices of invective into our blood stream.
You can use any example in one of two ways. You can either take it as an example of a particular type of insult, or else you can use it to adopt an insulting attitude yourself. In other words the examples have a two-way use.
None of us, hopefully, will be foolish enough to imagine that a few hours curled up with this encyclopedia and a bottle of gin will turn us into Oscar Wildes or Dorothy Parkers overnight. However, perhaps rubbing shoulders with some of the big shots and taking a vicarious pleasure in their put downs and sneers will give us a taste of the satisfaction to be gained from giving a perfectly timed and carefully chosen insult.
And of course there’s the added bonus that it suddenly puts you in a good mood again!
