Een verbijsterend en verzwegen hoofdstuk uit onze geschiedenis
Almelo, 1948. José wordt door haar oom naar een tehuis van de Zusters van De Goede Herder gestuurd om haar te beschermen tegen haar gewelddadige vader. Eenmaal binnen krijgt ze een andere naam, zitten alle deuren op slot en mag ze niet met de andere meisjes praten. Ze wordt zes dagen per week gedwongen lange dagen te werken, onbetaald. Als ze zich verzet, wordt ze opgesloten in een cel.
In De meisjes van De Goede Herder volgt Christel Don meisjes die tussen 1860 en 1980 in een van de katholieke ‘liefdesgestichten’ van De Goede Herder terechtkwamen. Gaandeweg wordt duidelijk hoe groot de psychische druk was waar ze onder leefden. Ook anderen komen aan het woord: een zuster, een groepsleidster, buurtbewoners, kinderen van een ex-pupil en een jonge misdienaar. In dit boek geeft Christel Don een stem aan de duizenden meisjes en vrouwen die hun verhaal nooit hebben kunnen vertellen, die niet werden geloofd of die altijd hebben gezwegen.

Foreword
The observations recorded in this publication have been collected during practical educational work in the three houses of the Hampstead Nursery:
13, Wedderburn Road, London, N.W.3 (Nursery-School);
5, Netherhall Gardens, London, N.W.3 (50 resident children from birth to 5 years);
“New Barn,” Lindsell near Dunmow, Essex (40 resident children from 2 to 10 years).
The Hampstead Nursery is a Colony of the Foster Parents’ Plan for War Children, Inc., New York, and as such owes its whole existence to American generosity. Like the other Colonies of the Foster Parents’ Plan it provides war-time homes for children whose family life has been broken up temporarily or permanently owing to war conditions. Like the other Colonies of the Foster Parents’ Plan, although residential it is not run on institutional lines. It tries to re-establish for the children what they have lost: the security of a stable home with its opportunities for individual development.
The only characteristic of “institutional” life which it is powerless to avoid is the absence of the family itself. War conditions, i.e. the fathers’ service in the Forces, full-time factory work of many mothers, evacuation as a precautionary measure and the destruction of many small homes through bombing have disrupted family life among large sections of the population. Consequently many infants, though not parentless, were rendered homeless. They had to be collected in residential nurseries and there suffered the experience of “life without the family” which is, in peace-time, reserved for the inhabitants of orphanages.
