“As a sample of work done in the Hampstead Child-Therapy Clinic, the case of Andy has a variety of purposes.
“As a clinical example it illustrates successful analytic treatment carried out in the case of a very young boy who suffered from developmental upsets and made his environment suffer through his aggressive outbursts, his disturbances of sleep, and his difficult behavior. Analysis in his case is shown to have proved therapeutic with regard to early symptom formation and truly preventive so far as the threat of a later full-blown infantile neurosis was concerned.
“There are various ways in which the mother of a two-and-a-half-year-old participates in plans for his treatment: it can take the form of simultaneous analysis of mother and child; or of treatment of the child through the mother (guided by the analyst); or of straightforward child analysis with added guidance of the mother. What was chosen in Andy’s case was the third possibility, but with ‘mother guidance’ given in a special form. Without undergoing analysis or any form of psychotherapy herself, Andy’s mother was included in the analytic process, shared in her son’s involvement with transference and resistance, as well as in his receiving and working through of interpretation and enlightenment. At the end of treatment, both mother and child could be seen to emerge together on a new level of understanding, liberation and development. The consecutive steps of this satisfying venture are illustrated in detail by the weekly reports which form Chapter 5 of the Monograph.
“For the rest, Andy’s case is used to demonstrate the indexing of analytic material, which is one of the ways in which analysts may learn to lay down their personal clinical impressions to be shared with others. How this is being done in the Hampstead Clinic is explained at length in Chapter 1. What we hope to construct by this laborious method is something of a ‘collective analytic memory,’ i.e., a storehouse of analytic material which places at the disposal of the single thinker and author an abundance of facts gathered by many, thereby transcending the narrow confines of individual experience and extending the possibilities for insightful study, for constructive comparisons between cases, for deduction and generalizations, and finally for extrapolations of theory from clinical therapeutic work.”
