Psychophysics is traditionally conceived as the science of relations between mind and body, the science that attempts to discover numerical laws relating psychological dimensions and physical dimensions. This conception is shared both by Fechner, who founded the science, and by S. S. Stevens, its leading contemporary practitioner. The old psychophysics claimed to have measured “sensations” by using the just noticeable difference (jnd) as a sensation unit, and to have discovered Fechner’s law, which states that sensations are a logarithmic function of the stimuli that produce them. The new psychophysics claims to have measured “perceptual magnitudes” by ratio-scaling methods and cross-modality comparisons, and to have discovered Stevens’ law, which states that perceptual magnitudes are a power function of their physical correlates. In this book Mr. Savage argues that both the old and the new psychophysicists have misconstrued their goal as the measurement of psychological dimensions, and the endless controversy over whether such dimensions are genuinely measurable has made psychophysics sterile. This assessment is supported by extensive examinations of the nature of measurement and of the distinction between psychological and physical dimensions. Loudness, pitch, brightness, and hue are not dimensions of sensations, nor are they psychological dimensions in any other sense; and laws relating them to dimensions of sound waves and light waves are not psychological laws. Indeed, the distinction between psychological and physical dimensions is so confused that no acceptable reconstruction of it is possible. In an acceptable view of measurement, loudness, pitch, and the like are measurable in the same sense in which length and weight are measurable. Furthermore, the jnd method of Fechner and the ratio-scaling methods of Stevens cannot be regarded as methods for measuring psychological length, strength of weight sensations, and other so-called psychological dimensions. These methods are products of a faulty analogy between psychological dimensions and measurement and physical dimensions and measurement. Mr. Savage views perceptual psychophysics as the science, not of relations between psychological and physical dimensions, but of perceptual abilities. He views psychophysical measurement not as the measurement of psychological dimensions but as the acquisition of quantitative responses to stimuli that have been measured by familiar “physical” procedures. According to this radical conception, the problem of psychophysical measurement simply dissolves; Stevens’ and Fechner’s laws become artifacts of philosophical confusion; and perceptual psychophysics is freed from the problems that have heretofore made its pursuit endlessly frustrating.
