Through the Narrow Gate is the first work of its kind to take a critical perspective upon the writing of Russell Hoban, undoubtedly one of the most significant authors of our time. Christine Wilkie reveals the ways in which Hoban, as a person who patiently explores his own psyche, demonstrates in his writing archetypal patterns, images, and motifs that are the spontaneous manifestations of a mythological consciousness. She does this against an integral consideration of such works as those of Jung, Eliade, and Cassirer.
In the process of placing Hoban in a Euro-American context—in which he is compared to such writers as Vonnegut, Hesse, Pynchon, and Coover—the author moves into an inevitable consideration of the distinctive and unique contribution that Hoban is making to our range and understanding of literature. Wilkie identifies Hoban as a writer who digresses from the positivistic basis of fictional realism and who—in both his adult writing and his writing for children—challenges the convention of genre. And she suggests that in doing so, Hoban is widening the parameters by which genres have become recognized. In this respect, Hoban invites his readers to take risks in their reading of his works in much the same way as he himself takes risks in writing them.
As the introduction to this volume points out, Hoban’s writing does not fit easily into any contemporary patterns of Euro-American literature. It has the intelligence, invention, and a preoccupation with paradox that are evocative of the Argentine writer Borges. It bears some of the features of experimental contemporary writers, such as Pynchon and Vonnegut, in the sense that these authors digress from the conventional structures and the positivistic basis of fictional realism. Hoban shares with Coover a sense of an order beyond existing phenomena, and with Coover and Barth a mythical basis for his writing together with a sense of contemporary society living in a contracting universe. Like Vonnegut and Pynchon, Hoban employs dark humor as a vehicle for a vision of the duplicity and absurdity of modern life.
This seminal study addresses each of Hoban’s works in chronological sequence, beginning with The Mouse and his Child—the novel that marked the watershed between his children’s and his adult writing—to his most recent novel, The Medusa Frequency, and his children’s literature. Subsequent chapters analyze narrative in Pinter’s screenplay for Hoban’s novel Turtle Diary and discuss Hoban’s adaptation for the stage of his most internationally successful novel, Riddley Walker, a post-holocaust story delivered in a debased vernacular English that is examined here as a novel of mythological structures and contents. Finally, the volume also includes a transcript of an extensive interview between Hoban and the author.
Through the Narrow Gate will be of interest to readers already committed to Hoban and to new readers who seek perspective on Hoban through either his individual works or his writings as a whole.
