Georg Groddeck has often been called the founder of psychosomatic medicine. Considering the opposition he encountered, he would have found some satisfaction in being recognized as a leader in what has now become an established separate discipline in medical psychotherapeutics. He was unquestionably an original thinker and therapist, bent above all on showing that there is no basic difference between organic and mental illness. To use his own words, his achievement was “the introduction of a knowledge of the unconscious into the treatment of all patients, and particularly those patients who suffer from organic illnesses.”
This volume, which takes its title from one of Groddeck’s papers, presents a selection of his most important psychoanalytic writings including, for the first time in English, his correspondence with Freud. Although Groddeck was not trained as a psychoanalyst, Freud had no hesitation in “claiming” him as a member of the group after receiving his very first letter. Later Freud defended him against other analysts, encouraged him to write, and always showed interest in his work. Through his encounter with Freud, in fact, Groddeck has become a part of the history of psychoanalysis.
