In 1964 The Building Centre Trust prepared a travelling exhibition of new building in British Universities, which has been constantly in demand since the first showing and has been seen by a wide audience throughout Britain and Europe. The success of this exhibition has encouraged the Trust to follow it with another, this time dealing with building for old people.
Building for old people is of course no new thing in Britain. Almshouses and other provision for the care of the old have been administered by religious and charitable bodies for nearly a thousand years, but never until this century has there been such widespread concern for elderly people’s welfare, nor so much effective action. Nearly 25% of the housing built in Britain today is for elderly people; local authorities and private organisations provide residential homes for old people unable to look after themselves. Great advances are being made in the special accommodation needed in hospitals for geriatric work; public and private bodies are concerned in setting up clubs and other community facilities for old people.
No comprehensive architectural study of this important subject has yet been made. The Building Centre Trust asked local authorities, private organisations and architects throughout the whole country for information about work carried out in the past ten years. The response was excellent. From over seven hundred schemes submitted for consideration, sixty were finally selected as representative of the best. Had it not been necessary to keep the exhibition within a size convenient for travelling, many more good examples could have been included.
The Trust has tried to illustrate how the needs of the elderly are being met. I think the exhibition shows that everyone in this country who is concerned with old people’s welfare devotes a great deal of thought and effort to their particular problems, and that everything possible is being done to ensure that old people, far from being neglected, are thought of as a respected and important part of the life of Britain today.
