COHEN
A. Man’s goal is an understanding of the nature of life. Central to this search is to approach an understanding of what we call God. The trend of the past few centuries seems to be toward de-anthropomorphizing God. His manifestation is order—an order which the scientist, the artist, and others may glimpse and bring to the rest of us. The order extends from the microscopic to the macrocosmic. A repetitive structural pattern appears, demonstrable on many levels of organization. A basic relationship between the animate and the inanimate, and from the very small to the very large, seems to be emerging. If so, it is neither accidental nor incidental.
Searching for such absolutes and universals is a prime goal of man. Living according to them is another.
Man has acquired the unusual ability to be aware of his own awareness—a precious gift. He can look at himself, at the Earth, at the universe, and ask “Why?” and “How?” Why is much more important than How, but experience has taught us that when we know enough about How, Why can be answered. Methods help explain cause. It is important not to get lost in How.
This is a period of enormous change. The security of tradition and monolithic faith is gone for many, the turbulent interval of transition is upon us. Today’s cottage is tomorrow’s skyscraper. Today’s faith is tomorrow’s absurdity. It is no wonder that so many yearn for magic. It is quite understandable that we should want the reassurance of an answer now.
An answer may be too much to hope for even over the millennia. Can we endure not to know? Can we be content to be part of a perennial process? Can we be satisfied seeking answers toward an answer?
Because that is man’s goal.

Can one escape from the games of life with LSD?

In this sense, escape is possible, even if only for a moment; not the escape into unconsciousness as in sleep, nor the escape into fantasy as with the opiates, but escape to freedom—the freedom to take a completely new photograph of the Here and Now—to stand aside from Maya, “the whole beautiful, dreadful, enchanting and desperate kaleidoscope of life with its burning joys and sorrows,” and just BE!
If anything, it is escape into LIFE!
