E. Verbeek verwijst naar Ernst Verbeek (1919–2009), een Nederlands psychiater, hoogleraar en publicist. Hij studeerde geneeskunde in Leiden en Amsterdam en was assistent van H.C. Rümke en Jan Droogleever Fortuyn. In 1956 vestigde hij zich als psychiater in Arnhem. Van 1969 tot 1985 was hij hoogleraar Klinische Psychiatrie aan de Rijksuniversiteit Gent en directeur-diensthoofd van de Psychiatrische Kliniek aldaar. Verbeek stond bekend als aanhanger van de Utrechtse School en combineerde fenomenologie met psychoanalyse in zijn existentiële benadering van de psychiatrie. Hij was een uitgesproken criticus van de antipsychiatrie. Daarnaast schreef hij pathografische studies over literaire figuren, waaronder *Arthur Rimbaud: een pathografie* (1957), waarvoor hij in 1959 de Henriette Roland Holst-prijs ontving.
