In 1951 the village of Pont‑Saint‑Esprit in Southern France was overtaken by a horrid manifestation of the powers of nature. Many of the inhabitants suddenly began to suffer from low blood pressure, slow pulses, dilated pupils, sweating and insomnia. They gave off a rancid smell of dead mice and stale urine. But these physical signs were only the preliminaries to much more terrifying mental aberrations. A mystical state of beatitude with distortions of time and space, intensification of colours and simple forms alternated with wild and uncontrollable feelings of terror, persecution and loathing. Some saw monstrous animals intent on devouring them. Many felt an overpowering urge to jump from windows. Others saw great balls of fire descending on them or were consumed with the desire to repeat *ad nauseam* some trivial routine, to write endlessly, or to run naked. Those worst afflicted had to be put in strait jackets and taken to mental institutions. Five people died and many never entirely regained their mental and physical faculties.
It became obvious at an early stage that the one common factor among all the sufferers was that they had all eaten bread from the same bakery. The official investigation’s findings were that the illness was caused by flour becoming contaminated with some agricultural fungicide containing mercury. The author shows convincingly that this verdict flies in the face of the facts and is contradictory to the opinions of the local doctors who actually had to deal with the poisoning. *[continued on back flap]*
Villagers were suffering from St. Anthony’s Fire or Ergotism — a manifestation recorded frequently in the Middle Ages and caused by damp grain producing a fungoid growth. This growth in turn generates a substance closely akin to L.S.D.
In effect, the villagers were suffering from massive doses of L.S.D. Then, as now, there was no cure. The author goes on to describe the efforts to obtain redress against the Union Meuniere — the monopolistic agency responsible for the supply of defective flour. The book is a remarkable piece of reportage of a little known incident, which now appears alarmingly relevant to the present drug debate. ([Goodreads][1])

John G. Fuller (Incident at Exeter. The Interrupted Journey) here records another kind of trip, taken involuntarily by some 300 inhabitants of a French town. The breaking off of the church Madonna's arm in 1951 was an ill omen for Pont-Saint-Esprit, on the dividing line between Provence and Languedoc. The omen was fulfilled when the clients of M. Briand, a prosperous and responsible baker, fell ill after eating the second baking on a hot July day. They suffered, according to the author, from all the symptoms of historical ergotism, not seen since 1816 and most commonly associated with the Middle Ages. Victims experienced the euphorie beate, characterized by unsuitable high spirits and sleeplessness, followed by l'eclosion brutale, the ""savage breaking out""--hallucinations and a mad desire to leap from the nearest window. Five died. Briand and others had complained of the greyish, oily flour allotted to them by the powerful Union Meuriere. It was traced to the mill of M. Maillet and a lengthy trial ensued. The association of victims ultimately received recompense in 1965. Mr. Fuller is convinced that they were unwitting consumers of massive doses of LSD, a derivative form of ergot of rye. . . .
