The second half of our century has seen a rapid and broad expansion of mathematics and theoretical physics in all specialisations. Much has been achieved, in algebra, geometry, analysis and stochastics, as well as in quantum field theory, statistical mechanics and dynamical systems.
Despite the often separate developments in mathematics and physics, there has always been a strong interaction between both disciplines, e.g. infinite dimensional algebras and strings, group theory and crystals, symplectic geometry and mechanics, dynamical systems and fluid mechanics, chaos and turbulence and operator algebras and quantum field theory.
Due to the rapid progress in the field it is important for researchers on these subjects to become acquainted with new developments in an expedient way. One problem is that the integration of both disciplines is far from being complete, which could result in a lack of mathematical rigour in theoretical physics and a loss of fruitful sources of inspiration in mathematics. A second problem is posed by the fact that the literature in mathematical physics is scattered over many periodicals.
Studies in Mathematical Physics aims at discussing recent developments in physics offering sound mathematics and a high didactical quality. The emphasis lies on techniques, ideas and methods that are fundamental, interesting and innovating in both mathematics and physics, herewith creating a link between the two disciplines.
