Een extreem zeldzame eerste druk van deze originele brochure van Ambroise-Auguste Liébeault, stichter van de École de Nancy. In dit beknopte werk probeert hij de fysieke realiteit van het ‘fluide magnétique’ aan te tonen. Aan de hand van observatie en eenvoudige experimenten stelt hij dat het neurische fluïde zich buiten het lichaam kan manifesteren.

Liébeault is one of the most important figures in the history of hypnotism. In 1848, while engaged in his medical studies, Liébeault read a book on animal magnetism and was immediately intrigued. He successfully mesmerized a few people, but did not take the experiment any further at that time. He received his medical degree in 1850 and began a rural practice. In 1860 he learned of the experiments with Braid’s hypnotism performed by Eugène Azam (1822–1899) and decided to see if it could be of use to him in his medical practice. Looking for willing subjects, he announced to his clientelle that patients who agreed to treatment by hypnotism would not be charged. He soon had many patients to experiment with, and for the next few years developed his own unique approach to hypnotic therapeutics. Liébeault looked on hypnotic sleep as identical to natural sleep, except that the hypnotized patient is placed in that condition by an operator and is subject to a rapport with that person. Liébeault became a master of hypnotising patients, and attempted the cure of a great variety of illnesses. His healing technique centered around suggestion. While the patient was in a state of hypnotic sleep, Liébeault would make simple curative suggestions appropriate to the disease. These suggestions would negate the symptoms of the disease and inculcate good habits of health maintenance. In 1864, Liébeault moved to Nancy and took some time to write a book on his work; the result was Du sommeil. Here he describes his method of hypnotic induction and the various states that result. He speculates on the effects that hypnotic suggestion has on the nervous system and how healing through hypnotism takes place. Liébeault also writes about the hallucinations (sometimes of spirits) that can accompany somnambulism and the central role of suggestion in creating them. There is a widely circulated tale that only one copy of Du sommeil was sold in the first edition (there was a second edition called Le sommeil provoqué et les états analogues, in 1889), but that story is probably apocryphal. In any case, Liébeault’s book was not popular and he was virtually unknown among medical men for many years. Liébeault’s work was eventually noted by Hippolyte Bernheim (1840–1919), then professor of medicine at Nancy. Bernheim was very impressed by Liébeault and introduced his methods into the Nancy medical hospital. The result was instant fame for Liébeault and his theory. Liébeault and Bernheim drew a small group together around them, including Henri Beaunis (1830–1921) and Jules Liégeois (1833–1908), and formed the Nancy school of hypnotism, with its emphasis on suggestion as the essential cause of hypnotic effects. The influence of this school rapidly spread throughout Europe and remained a strong force for decades. The Nancy school was opposed principally by the Salpêtrière school of hypnotism, centered around Jean-Martin Charcot (1825–1893).
