The combination of three distinct cultures - Muslim, Christian and Jewish - has given Spain a character unique among the nations of Western Europe. The precise contribution of these cultures is described and analysed by Dr Kamen in this lucid and richly illustrated account of Spanish history from the first settlements to the rule of Francisco Franco. Muslim domination for three centuries subjected almost the entire peninsula to a hostile religion, an alien language and a novel culture which, though absorbed by later Christian usage, have survived as an ineffaceable and authentic part of the Hispanic mentality. Reconquered for Christianity in 1492, Spain developed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries a national ideology of feverish expansion on the American continent, and of a fervent religiosity reflected in the economically and culturally disastrous expulsion of the Jews and the establishment of the Inquisition. In recent centuries, the habit of violence has become a permanent feature of Spanish politics, and Dr Kamen traces the pattern of revolution and counter-revolution which finally culminated in the savage Civil War between supporters of the Republic of 1931 and Franco’s insurgent forces. Finally he discusses the nature and bases of support of the present regime and examines the social and economic divisions that, having persisted for centuries, still constitute Spain’s greatest problems today.
