Children of the Kibbutz is an account of the way in which the first generation of Israelis were raised to take their place in society. Professor Spiro and his wife present here a model inquiry into the dynamic relations between culture and personality; their book illuminates the study of children everywhere.
Children of the Kibbutz reports an intensive field study of Israeli character as it is formed under the impress of a particular kind of institution. How do children who are raised by the community, with their parents as loving onlookers, turn out? Are they like “institutional children,” lacking the capacity to form permanent attachments? The actual products, we learn, are law-abiding, responsible, intelligent, with strong loyalties to their peers — but with a shell of reserve, shyness, and superficial hostility.
A new introduction by the author shows how socialization studies, of which this is exemplary, can contribute to discovering the psychological bases of cultural uniformity and changes.

Provenance
Uit het bezit van en gesigneerd door Isaac-Edersheim, d.i. Elisa Hermine Isaac-Edersheim (1903–1999), psychoanalytica van Joodse afkomst. Zij publiceerde o.a. over joodse symboliek binnen de psychoanalyse (Messias, Golem, Ahasver, 1941), en was getrouwd met kinderpsychiater D.J. de Levita. In haar vakgebied stond ze bekend als Elly Isaac-Edersheim.
