Author's note: I wrote this book in 1929-1930. Most men then were still living in the Optimist Age. Now, after another great war, and atom bomb, and under the shadow of wars ahead, the book may not appear quite so irrelevant as it did then. It is not so distant from the mood of 1948. G.D.
