Provenance: Albert Moll (1862–1939)
Albert Moll was een Duitse arts, psychiater en pionier in de medische psychologie, geboren op 4 mei 1862 in Lissa (destijds Pruisen). Na studies geneeskunde in Breslau, Jena en Berlijn vestigde hij zich als zenuwarts in de Duitse hoofdstad, waar hij zich specialiseerde in hypnose, seksuele pathologie en medische ethiek.
Vanaf eind jaren 1880 verwierf Moll bekendheid met zijn experimentele benadering van hypnotisme. In 1889 verscheen zijn hoofdwerk Der Hypnotismus, dat later onder de titel The Study of Hypnosis werd vertaald en heruitgegeven. Hij combineerde klinisch inzicht met een wetenschappelijk sceptische houding, en onderzocht onder meer de juridische en medische implicaties van suggestie onder hypnose.
Moll stond kritisch tegenover het opkomende freudiaanse denken en voerde een felle polemiek met Freud en diens volgelingen. Tegelijkertijd was hij een belangrijk organisator: hij richtte in 1896 de Berlin Society for Experimental Psychology op en was mede-initiatiefnemer van het eerste wereldcongres voor seksuologisch onderzoek in 1926.
Zijn werk kenmerkt zich door zorgvuldige observatie, experimentele discipline en een uitgesproken afwijzing van occultisme, spiritualisme en ongefundeerde therapeutische claims. Moll getuigde als expert in rechtbanken over zogeheten "hypnotische misdrijven" en beïnvloedde daarmee zowel medisch als juridisch debat in Europa.
Hoewel zijn invloed na 1930 afnam door de dominantie van de psychoanalyse, geldt Albert Moll in retrospectief als een sleutelfiguur in de wetenschappelijke bestudering van hypnose, het bewustzijn en seksueel gedrag. Hij overleed in 1939 te Berlijn, maar zijn nalatenschap leeft voort in de medische, psychologische en historische literatuur.
