- Edition: 300 - Signed - Hristina Tasheva (b. 1976) was born in communist Bulgaria and grew up believing in communist ideals. In 1989, communist rule ended in Bulgaria. To this day, the country has poverty, corruption and an unprecedented level of emigration to the West. - From interview - https://www.fotodok.org/en/seeing-and-being-seen/ - ''You searched in the first part of your book for traces of the concentration camps, where the Dutch communists were imprisoned and murdered, and then the camps where the Bulgarian communists imprisoned and murdered their opponents. Why do you open with a poem by Marinus van der Lubbe? - Van der Lubbe's story made me want to know what happened to the arrested Dutch Communists. He was a young idealistic communist from Leiden. He was accused of setting the Reichstag in Berlin on fire after Hitler took power in 1933. This is where Holland and Bulgaria meet: Marinus had to stand trial in Leipzig along with three Bulgarian communists. [...] - I visited and photographed the memorial sites of the Nazi camps to bring that past to mind. That is the first part of the book. Then I went looking for the sites of the Communist camps in Bulgaria. These are much more difficult to find, because there are no official memorial sites as with the Nazi concentration camps. I plowed through the Internet and searched books with survivors' stories to find where these places are. That's how I was able to visualize the area of captivity, and that's the third part.' - New copy
