Based in part upon the author's two-volume Guide to the Royal Navy, which was published more than twenty years ago, this new book updates and corrects the earlier chapters; from the turn of the century, however, this is a wholly new study. In addition to technical fact and data throughout, the author provides assessment and critique of decisions events, designs and tactics over nearly two centuries. He has drawn on the resources of a wide range of archives to present fresh photographs, line drawings of significant warships and equipment, plus detailed maps illustrating the key battles and actions.
