The third edition of one of the best Dutch emblem books, both for its forcible text and its clear and well-cut engravings, which are typical for the Dutch engraver Claes Jansz. Visscher (1547-1620) instead of the tradiotional mythological iconography, he takes simple objects and scenes of daily life.
Roemer Visscher (1547-1620) was a succesful business man who treasured the company of poets, writers, painters and singers. He published this collection of emblems, partly inspired by Camerarius' Symbolorum et emblematum centuriae of 1595, after he had turned 65.
This book was first published in two editions, an oblong 4to and a 12mo one in 1614. Daughter Anna (1583-1651) added short poems to the 12mo editions of 1669 and 1678.
