II) Engraved title page printer’s device, 30 half page engravings (95 x 120 mm) by Vincent van der Vinne in the Vervolg der Leerzame Zinnebeelden and 4 halfpage engravings (95 x 120 mm) by J.C. Philips in the part Spiegel der Boetvaardigheid.
Blind tooled vellum laced case bindings, almost identical. On the covers 2 double fillet borders with tools on the corners of the inner border and a central arabesque lozenge shaped plate. Author, title and volume number written in brown ink on the spine.
The first part is in second, the second part in first edition. The latter part was published posthumously. This edition of the 1st part not mentioned by Landwehr, 3 copies in STCN.
The emblems in this book are taken from domestic and rural life. They depict a.o. a man at a dinner table, a man studying the stars, a music ensemble, a ship in a storm, an olive press, a glass painter, a cartographer, doctors treating the sick, children at a fancy fair and an old man in a walking contraption. In the 23rd emblem of volume II people who laugh at the ornaments of blacks in faraway countries are reminded of the fact that their own conduct is very similar.
The emblems are accompanied by texts from the Bible and moralistic remarks based on Christian priciples. Adriaan Spinniker (1676-1754) was a parson of the Mennonite Congregation in Amsterdam.
