Very rare first edition of the first Dutch translation of this wellknown emblem book, dedicated to the King of Spain and containing devices for princes. The translation is by Mattheus Smallegange.
Diego de Saavedra Faxardo (1584-1648) was a diplomat in the service of the Spanish crown. From his experiences and observations he described the qualities of an ideal Prince, his education and his manner of dealing with his subjects, foreigners and political problems at home and abroad.
In our copy Emblem XLII is the same as emblem XLIII (a hanging Lion), which actually should have been an emblem with two bees pulling a plow. This variant not mentioned by Landwehr.
Printed title with coat of arms on verso and dedication not bound in. As various copies without the printed title and dedication are recorded (Praz 484, copy OK 17-61 in the library of the University of Amsterdam, the copy in the St. Louis University recorded in NUC) it may be assumed that in quite a number of copies these two leaves were not bound in.
