Extremely rare issue, unknown to Landwehr, with the engraved title page in Spanish dated 1658. STCN 1 copy in Leufsta. One of the most popular emblem books of the period, first published in Munich in 1640 and translated and reprinted all over Europe. Diego de Saavedra Faxardo (1584-1648) was a diplomat in the service of the Spanish crown, who wrote the work for the moral guidance of the Infante Baltasar, son of Philip IV of Spain. From his experiences and observations he described the qualities of an ideal Prince: his education and his manner of dealing with his subjects, foreigners and political problems at home and abroad. The ideas in the book reveal a Christian and humanist spirit and contrast with Machiavellian maxims of statecraft.
The introductory emblem represents a printing press with the motto “Ex fumo in Lucem”. Around each emblem a beautiful border, all different.
