The Latin adaptation of Menestrier’s La Philosophie des images (Paris, 1682, illustrated with some woodcuts), a collection of thousands of devices under headings. Enigma’s, hieroglyphs, oracles, prophesies, lotteries, talismans and dreams. Lemma’s in Latin and French. The engravings are unsigned. Apart from numerous birds they depict a variety of subjects, including alchemists, fireworks, devils and monsters.
The first 94 pages contain a detailed critical survey of the emblematic works of 50 authors, from Giovio to Menestrier's contemporaries.
Claude François Ménestrier (1631-1705), member of the Society of Jesus, was a heraldist, numismatist and antiquary who wrote several books on subjects in this field.
