Plus d'informations
This moral description of life centres around the child as main character. The engravings describe childhood in a rather more allegoric than emblematic manner. They show many children’s games. The illustration on page 87 (‘De Kolf’) is a very early illustration of the game of golf, not mentioned by Murdoch, Library of Golf. The first edition appeared in 1712.
Jan Luyken (1649-1712) was a poet, painter and prolific engraver and etcher. He often wrote the text of a book for which he also engraved the illustrations. A spiritual experience in his youth caused his conversion to the baptist faith, which greatly influenced his poetry. He produced his most famous work, the Mirror of Human Occupation, together with his son Caspar
‘Jan Luyken’s children in his prints are quite obviously the “innocent lambs” of his text and are correspondingly idealized’ (Simon Schama, The embarrassment of riches).
