Plus d'informations
First edition of an educational emblem book on virtues and vices. The verses for the emblems and additional poetry were provided by the poetess Gezine Brit. Some of the finer emblems were engraved by Houbraken himself. The more elaborate classical designs were engraved by others, like J. Harrewyn, J. Folkema and M. Pool.
From her commentary on emblem III Miss Brit let it be known that, in contrast to Houbraken's belief, she considered both Adam and Eve responsible for the Fall – and not Eva alone.
Arnold Houbraken (1660-1719) was a professional painter and engraver, as a writer mostly known for his three volume encyclopedia of Dutch painters.
Gezine Brit (1669?-1747) was a poetess and quite well known in her time
