Jan van Hoogstraten (1662-1736), son of Frans and brother of David, was a poet and bookseller in Dordrecht. The author took the engravings from P. de la Cour’s Sinryke fabulen (1685) and wrote new fables for them in verse, this time in a 'playful version' and, contrary to what one would infer from the title, with less emphasis on the political meaning De la Court gave to them.
- Provenance: On upper pastedown: “Ledeboer” and bibliographical annotation on fly leaf. Dr. A.M. Ledeboer (1797-1887) was a bibliographile and bibliographer. His library was sold at auction in 1887.
- Literature: Landwehr 334 (erroneously 150 engravings); Praz 373; Lafontaine Verwey 141;
- Condition: Some handwritten annotations in brown ink on first fly leaf. Very fine copy on large paper. Second engraving (p.3) pasted over.
