Rare only edition. With this ambitious collection of poems the author followed in the footsteps of Daniel Heinsius, famed professor of the Leyden University, who in 1616 published a book of poems with the same title. In the preface Hofferus presents poetry as a useful tool for the education of christian citizens. Many of his poems have Latin motto’s with a translation in Dutch.
Some of the large engravings, partly also by Chrispyn de Passe, contain views of towns in the province of Zeeland, mostly Zierikzee, the author's home town, but also Zwanenburg, Kerkwerve and Ouwerkerk.
In his monograph Rubens to Daumier the Austrian art historian Otto Benesch described this book as “… adorned with etchings which in themselves are perfect little works of art, although only slightly connected with the text”.
The second part contains miscellaneous poetry, a.o. on events of the time, such as, in 1624, the conquest of San Salvador in Brazil by admiral Jacob Wellekes, the capture of the Spanish ‘silver fleet’ and the death of admiral Piet Heyn.
Adrianus Hofferus (1589-1644) was a cousin of Jacob Cats, who contributed one of the complimentary poems. He was an administrator of lands, but also a devoted amateur poet, who modestly referred to himself on leaf (*3) as ‘a goose among swans’, represented by the emblem.
- Provenance:
1) Big engraved armorial ex libris of the poet and statesman Samuel Iperss. Wiselius (1769-1845) on upper paste down with the motto: “Dulcia non meruit qui non gustavit amora”, “Wiselius”. His library was sold at auction in Amsterdam in 1845, the Hofferus was item 515.
2) Printed Ex libris on first fly leaf: “Ex bibliotheca J.W. Six”.
3) Handwritten in ink on first fly leaf: “de Vries 161”.
- Literature: Landwehr 317; Praz 370; Emblem Books in Leiden 233; Hollstein 186; Scheepers I, 197 ('Zeldzaam'); De Vries, Ned. Emblemata 161.
- Condition: Some smaller wormholes at the end of the book. From p. 113-119, 4 corners of paper professionally restored; throughout a bit browned; Else a fine copy in a nice binding.
