Plus d'informations
No copy in STCN. A Leeuwarden imprint of a curious German emblem book, inspired by Thomas Murner’s Schelmenzunft, which in turn was inspired by Sebastian Brandt’s Narrenschiff. Murner’s German version first appeared at Frankfurt in 1512, and Flitner’s Latin version also at Frankfurt in 1620. The Latin text is the same as the earlier Frankfurt edition, but the engravings are completely different.
De Vries considered these new engravings by an anonymous Dutch engraver much superior to the original German engravings and even feels they could be attributed to Crispyn de Passe. The engraving on p. 80 falls in the category ‘scatological’. The last engraving (on Despair) shows the devil assisting a man to hang himself (this engraving replaces the one in the Frankfurt editions of 1620 and 1663, which shows a devil and a man who lies on his back, tied up).
This is a reissue of the edition 1634 in which they altered the year of edition on the engraved title page. The date on the title page is MDCXXXIIII, to which ‘II’ is added (in print).
- Literature: Landwehr 236; Praz 337; Brunet II, 1293; Graesse II, 597; Lipperheide 6817.
- Condition: Text leaf G8 missing. Half of lower paste down paper torn away. Some stains at back cover.
