Only edition of a collection of fables in prose, published after the author's death, each of which has a political meaning. As a vehement anti-Orangist, he warns the reader continuously against the dangers of monarchy. The 100 numbered engravings contain always a Latin proverb.
Pieter de la Cour (1618-1685) was a textile merchant who also wrote poems and political and economic books. His revolutionary idea’s were so extreme that even his colleague anti-monarchists kept their distance from him.
Emblems nr. 15 (I.G.), 18 (I.G.F), 21(I.G.F), 24 (, 32 (I.Gole.F) and 77 have the illustrator’s initials I.G. F. or I.Gole F.. The same illustrations were used in Staat-en zedekundige zinneprenten by J. van Hoogstraten, Rotterdam, A. Willis, 1731. (Landwehr 334).
In 1703 an English translation was published in London in two 8vo volumes, entitled Fables moral and political, without the engravings.
