Nearly twenty years have passed since the first publication of Lombroso's L'uomo delinquente. The work emerged as a revolutionary contribution to criminology, in which Lombroso, a respected professor of psychiatry from Turin, presented an entirely new doctrine. He introduced the concept of the "born criminal," asserting that criminality is not merely a moral deviation but a biologically determined phenomenon. Lombroso claimed that criminals could be identified by specific physical characteristics, such as asymmetrical faces, prominent cheekbones, and smaller skulls. These ideas sharply contrasted with classical criminal law theories, which viewed crime as a conscious choice made by a morally responsible individual.
The reception of Lombroso's theories was initially overwhelmingly positive. Scientists and jurists from all over Europe were fascinated by his theories, which were seen as a groundbreaking step towards a more scientific approach to criminal law. Lombroso's work led to the establishment of the Italian School of Criminal Anthropology, and his ideas were extensively discussed at major scientific congresses, such as the one in Rome in 1885, where he was celebrated as the founder of a new discipline. His theories were widely disseminated and resonated in various scientific and public circles.
In the years following the publication of his work, Lombroso's ideas have been the subject of debate and revision. At later congresses, such as those in Paris and Brussels, his theory of the "criminal type" was critically examined. Although Lombroso's work is recognized as pioneering, scientists such as Manouvrier concluded that the physical characteristics he described were also found in non-criminals. These researchers emphasized that environmental factors and social conditions play an equally important, if not more significant, role in criminal behavior. Lombroso's theories, though revolutionary for their time, are now seen as an important but not uncontested contribution to criminology. His work remains a valuable historical source, providing insight into the development of criminal law theories and the search for a scientific approach to crime.
