¶ Waarschijnlijk heeft Wim Crouwel (Total Design) een gedeelte van de vormgeving verzorgd, maar hij wordt niet vermeld in het colofon. Huygen p. 273 beeldt de cover af zonder verdere informatie. Niet in Wolters.
Gilbert & George werden bekend met performances en grote fotowerken achter glas. Ze zijn wegbereiders geweest voor performance-kunst, videokunst en conceptuele kunst. Het Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo kocht 'The Paintings' in 2010 aan.
