On the Way Out is the story of the struggles of Max Hayes against the odds of love and job-hunting in contemporary London. It is a very masculine and at times exceedingly funny book, full of a knowing adoration of women. Mr. Williams doesn't put a pint wrong. Flat-life, parties, frightful offices, pubs (marvellous pubs), social climbers, the whole Chelsea-Pimlico scene is touched off with effortless skill and effrontery.
Max Hayes belongs to the iconoclastic group of young men, who find themselves constantly pitted against the smoothies in life—people like Eden Parsmore, who to the rest of the world, for some reason or other, appear handsome, clever and idealistic, and who possess an extraordinary and inexplicable attraction for women. There were thousands of Maxes to every Eden Parsmore and each of them finds that the dice is loaded against him from the word go. And Carol is one of those elusive girls who spend their time playing hot and cold with the Maxes.
The ending is splendidly ironic. On the Way Out brims with ideas and situations, of the sort that make one look forward with considerable eagerness to Mr. Williams's future development as a writer.
