A fascinating work containing twenty four (volume III) and twenty four (volume IV) fascinating biographies of eminent men, each with an accompanying gallery portrait plate; volume III and IV from Arthur Thomas Malkins original seven volume work. This work was originally published under the superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Whilst no author is listed to the title page, this volume and the others in the set are attributed to Arthur Thomas Malkin. Volume III and IV only. With numerous black and white in-text illustrations, fourty eight portrait plates (each with a protective tissue guard). This work contains portraits and biographies on the following subjects: Erskine Dolland John Hunter Petrarch Burke Henry IV Bentley Kepler Hale Franklin Schwartz Barrow;Alembert Hogarth Galileo Rembrandt Dryden La Perouse Cranmer Tasso Ben Jonson Canova Chaucer Sobieski and Daguesseau, Cromwell, Leonardo da Vinci, Vauban, William III, Goethe, Correggio, Napoleon, Linnaeus, Priestley, Ariosto, Marlborough, De l'Epee, Colbert, Washington, Murillo, Cervantes, Frederic II, Delambre, Drake, Charles V, Des Cartes, Spenser, Grotius. In a half leather tooled linen binding with gilt detail to spine. Externally generally smart, bumped to extremities and head and tail of spine. Internally firmly bound, clean apart from some staining on certain places.
