John Julius Norwich, son of Lady Diana and Duff Cooper, lives in London. His previous books include A History of Venice, and two volumes on the medieval Norman kingdom in Sicily. He serves as Chairman of the Venice in Peril Fund, and is an active member of the House of Lords.
When Thomas Cook organized his first excursion in England on July 5, 1841, 570 intrepid men and woman paid one shilling each to ride a train ten miles and back accompanied by a brass band, and were rewarded with tea and buns at the finish. The age of the toureist had arrived. But as it became easier and easier to travel, it became more and more difficult to be a true traveler - to find the escitement, the challenge, and the endlessly intriguing unknown that travelling had once automaticaly implied. Otday we make our reservations, hop on planes, follow the guidebooks, and see the world, yet we don’t often experience what we see. And it is this kind of experience - this immersion in place and people, this intense quickening of the senses - that John Julius Norwich (himself a passionate traveller) celebrates with this wonderful collection of travel writings.
Norwich has chosen exerpts from the writings of authors from Homer to Paul Theroux, and he groups them not chronologically but according to aspects and themes of travel that have been applicable in every age: “Advice to Travellers,” “First Impressions,” “Hardships,” “Health and Hygiene,” “Cuisine,” “Bad Moments,” “Euphoria,” and “Homecomings” are only a few. The extracts run from the very simple (The Natural History of Iceland, published in 1758, contains a chapter entitled “Concerning Owls,” which in its entirety reads: “There are no owls of any kind in the whole island.”) to the fantastically detailed (William Lithgow’s harrowing description of his incarceration as a British spy - whick included six hours on the “Racke”- in Malaga in the early 1600s); from the poetically tongue-tied (Lawrence Durrell writes of the Grekk island of Kalymnos: “The minde runs up and down the web of vocabulary looking for a word which will doj uistice to it. In vain.”) to the briliantly descripive (Charles Dicken’s first impressions of Italy are as rich as any of the worlds he created in his novels).
Among the other writers whose work is tapped for this compendium are: Chaucer, Robert Louis Stevenson, Dr. karl Baedker, Evelyn Waugh, Jonathan Raban, John Ruskin, Freya Stark, Mungo park, Mark Twain, Mary Kingsley, Graham Greene, Bruce Chatwin, lady Diana Cooper, Noel Coward, Sybille Bedford, and Henry James. But a large part of the book’s charm lies in Norwich’s own narrative, anecdotes and comments with which he links his selections. The result is a highly personal and wonderfully entertaining “companion” for the actual or the armchair traveller - a companion that recalls and re-creates the adventure and romance that travel itself once gave us.

Mochten er meerdere advertenties met eenzelfde titel zijn, dat zit het verschil dus in de details (kwaliteit).

Ondanks alle zorgvuldigheid is het mogelijk dat er een geschreven naam (meestal op één van de voorbladen, in zeldzame gevallen op de kaft), een onderstreping of aantekening (meestal bij studieboeken) over het hoofd gezien wordt. Over het algemeen zal dit echter in de beschrijving opgenomen zijn.

Bij de boeken vermeld ik of ze door de brievenbus passen of niet. Dit is dan geldig voor dat ene boek. Bij bestelling van meerdere boeken zal het meestal niet meer als brievenbuspakje verzonden kunnen worden. De maximale afmetingen van een brievenbuspakket is: 380 x 265 x 32 mm inclusief verpakking. Boeken 300 x 185 x 24 mm passen met verpakking nog door de brievenbus.

Op dit moment noem ik de verzendkosten en eventuele verpakkingsbijdrage niet bij de advertenties. Dit omdat verzendkosten afhankelijk zijn van hoeveelheid boeken en of het pakket- of brievenbuspost betreft. Ook de voorkeur van de koper voor een bepaalde vervoerder kan meespelen.

Verzenden kan via PostNL (brievenbuspakje of pakket), Homerr (alleen naar een afleverpunt) of, via DHL (naar thuisadres of afleverpunt). De verschillende opties en prijzen ontvangt u per mail in reactie op de automatische mail na bestellen via Boekwinkeltjes. Ik probeer de boeken zo snel mogelijk na ontvangst van betaling te verzenden, maar dat is mede afhankelijk van de tijd die ik op dat moment heb.

Zelf heb ik overigens de beste ervaring met verzending (maar ook ontvangen) via PostNL. Homerr heb ik nu een aantal keer gebruikt, en ook dat lijkt goed te gaan (en voordeliger wanneer het een klein pakket betreft welke niet door de brievenbus past). DHL lijkt qua verzending ook goed te gaan na een eerste ervaring.

Afhalen is mogelijk, maar enkel in goed overleg.

VRAAG: Gezien de afmetingen van het boek, past deze door de brievenbus, toch staat er in de omschrijving dat het boek niet door de brievenbus past. Hoe zit dat?

ANTWOORD: Boeken die we verzenden worden goed verpakt. Deze verpakking maakt het geheel groter. Om die reden houden wij een marge aan voor wat door de brievenbus past of niet. Overigens is het verzenden met bijvoorbeeld Homerr als pakje, niet zo heel veel duurder dan een PostNL brievenbuspakje met track & trace.
