The Meander visited not only Brunei but also Port Essington, Cape York, New Guinea, New Britain, New Ireland, Sydney, Hobart Town, Norfolk Island, etc., and the work includes an account of the natives of Northern Australia. Capt. Keppel was instructed to take James Brooke from England to Labuan in 1847 where Brooke was appointed Governor of the new colony. Keppel also accompanied Brooke to N. Borneo and the Philippines and this account covers an important period in the history of British Borneo. Includes a reprint of Brooke's journals from Labuan & Sarawak and also an account of the natives of Australia. Piracy in the China Seas, regatta at Macao, explosion of the Dona Maria Frigate. Manila, rivers, cities, villages, manufactures, perils of Nobility. A superb primary resource and a great narrative of travel within S.E. Asia, and the S. China seas, Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore &c.
The 1843-44 campaign against Borneo pirates during which Keppel made the acquaintance of James Booke, who had been made rajah of Sarawak in perpetuity by the Sultan of Brunei after Brooke's successful attempt to open foreign trade with Borneo while maintaining peaceful relations with the natives. "The first volume concerns itself with Brooke's exploits in Sarawak from 1838-1842, prior to his meeting with Keppel...Volume two recounts the military exploits of Brooke, Keppel, and Sir Edward Belcher, who occasionally came to Keppel's aid; gives a geographical overview of Borneo; and includes accounts of the Dyaks, the aboriginal Bornean tribes"
His family connections secured him rapid promotion, and he was promoted to Captain in 1837. His long naval career took him to many places including the West and East Indies and Australia. Keppel served with distinction in 1841 during the first Opium War in China and in the Baltic campaign of 1854; he was also active in suppressing piracy in Borneo.
