Dit artikel bespreekt de 1681 editie van The Anatomy of the Brain, door Thomas Willis (1621-1675), die voor het eerst in het Latijn werd gepubliceerd in 1664. Hoewel de beschrijving van de bloedsomloop aan de basis van de hersenen deel uitmaakt van deze tekst, is de meerderheid van het boek is gewijd aan functionele anatomische kenmerken van de hersenen. Dit is een vroege poging van Willis om de anatomische kenmerken van de hersenen van kadavers te vertalen in toegewezen gedrags- en neurofysiologische functies. Er worden uitgebreide vergelijkingen gemaakt tussen "lagere" dieren en mensen, waarbij de nadruk wordt gelegd op de verschillen in hun intellect. Dit unieke document luidde het tijdperk van de moderne neuroanatomie in en legde de basis voor toekomstig neuroanatomisch en neurofysiologisch onderzoek.
