The image of the Soviet man and woman as industrious and upright, the society as equitable was carefully controlled. and photography was acknowledged as one of the chief tools of propaganda. Those who were able to publish their work as professional photographers or even exhibit as amateurs in photo clubs had carefully mapped out subjects: street and city scenes testified to well-being or at least sufficiency, and muckraking was limited to foreign correspondents. The subject of this book is another group: photographers interested in revealing other realities and experimenting in taboo subjects. The fourteen photographers whose photos are published in this Russian Museum catalogue worked in Leningrad during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s and give glimpses of the seamy side of society or photograph purely for aesthetic purposes. Those who gave up prospects of publication or exhibition their worked at risk, and their photos are thus examples of nonconformist art, and they reveal how Eastern European work fits into the history of twentieth-century photograph. 319 p., 33 cm, approx. 300 b/w illus.
