By the end of the Spanish Civil War in March 1939 there were over 500,000 refugees from Spain registered in France. This book is dedicated to those exiles who, in the words of the author, are the real heroes and heroines of modern times." In 1953, with the help of a distinguished group of friends including Pablo Casals, James T Farrell, Mary McCarthy, Dwight Macdonald, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., and Norman Thomas, Nancy Macdonald founded Spanish Refugee Aid to help the 10,000 Spaniards who, after fourteen years of exile and eight of war, were desperately needy. Homage to the Spanish Exiles is more than the story of how an organization was formed and functioned. It is the stories of the refugees themselves, both during the war and in the aftermath, which for many has never ended.
Interspersed with the absorbing history of how these exiles were helped, utilizing more than five million dollars raised over thirty-one years, are the moving accounts told in their own words by such forgotten people as Primitivio and Faustina, who were prisoners of Franco; Miguel, a voice from the Spanish underground; Jose from the French maquis; and Mariano who reports on the Anarchist town he helped run during the civil war And many more....
