The history proper of the decline starts with the ascension of Commodus in 186 A.D. and ends with the fall of Constantinople in 1453 A.D. Preliminary chapters are devoted to the 2nd century A.D., the age of the Antonines, considered to be the peak of the Roman empire, with great prosperity and political stability. This is to
contrast with the political turmoil that follows it with the next century counting a staggering number of thirty emperors. Political incompetence and strife culminate in the sack of Rome in 410 A.D. by the Goths ( of all people ). Next we see the empire divided in a western and an eastern part, the rise of the Turks and the fall of Constantinople in 1453.
