'A Modern Slavery' is about Nevinson's long visit to the Portuguese colony of Angola in late 1904 and early 1905. When it was first published (in 1906) it became immediately famous with those who battled on the liberal side of life and odious to those who did not. Grim and fearful in its steady picture of a slave colony, the book is shot through with Nevinson's underlying belief that what was evil could be mended and what was good might yet be made to prevail. Many who read it at the time were stirred to protest, and although their pressure on the dumb ox of conformity had no great result it is nonetheless true that nothing afterwards was ever quite the same. Nevinson had told the truth, and the truth was terrible. And once the truth was out there flowed onward a sure small stream of memory and understanding, so that later, when others returned to the same scandal, the could find a wide hearing fot what they had to say. 'A Modern Slavery' is nog only journalism at its highest point, a prime example to all who practice the craft of telling the truth about things as they happen, or at least of trying to tell it: this book is also a capital document in the history of modern Africa.
