“Built like a Mack truck” has long been part of the American vernacular, and Mack’s Bulldog trademark is an internationally recognized symbol of quality and toughness. This is the fascinating story of how a late-1800s wagon-maker became one of today’s premier heavy- truck manufacturers.
At the dawn of the 20th Century, countless automobile “manufacturers” were springing up around America, mostly from backyard garages. But relatively few built vehicles capable of hauling heavy loads, which required more power than most engines of the day could produce. As a result, cargo was still transported locally by horse-drawn wagons.
Falleson & Berry of Brooklyn, New York, was a manufacturer of such wagons. John Mack, a native Pennsylvanian, had purchased the company in 1893, and along with his brothers, Gus and William, maintained its reputation for high-quality workmanship.
But they didn’t shift to motorized vehicles until 1900, when Isaac Harris, owner of a Brooklyn sightseeing company, ordered a bus capable of hauling 15 to 20 people—far more than any automobile of the day could handle. Propelled by a 24-horsepower, four- cylinder gasoline engine built by the Mack brothers themselves, this large vehicle became the basis not only for more sightseeing buses, but for trucks as well. And with that, the Mack legend was born.

With vivid photography and insightful text, Mack: Driven for a Century traces the truck-maker’s rich history. Automotive historian John Heilig fashions a decade-by-decade chronicle of the people and vehicles that made Mack a worldwide legend. The lively picture/ caption format is ideally suited to this fast-paced story.
It begins in the days of solid tires, rock- hard suspensions, and top speeds that would challenge our patience today, and reaches right to the smooth-riding, aerodynamic, state-of-the-art Vision by Mack™ highway tractor. You’ll see Mack® trucks in action as they helped build the American dream. New York City’s subway system, the Hoover Dam, and coundess skyscrapers were constructed by people who put their faith in Mack trucks—and in the process, helped cement the company’s reputation.
Enhancing the legend was the performance of Mack trucks in wartime. The rugged, dependable machines proved their worth in the heat of battle. In fact, the stamina and endurance of the famous AC model so impressed the British in World War I that they bestowed the honored “Bulldog” nickname upon the gritty trucks. The name stuck, and the Bulldog, that tenacious symbol of Great Britain, became the company’s trademark as well.
No business survives for a century without challenges, and Mack is no exception. There were lean years to be sure, but like the Bulldog that stands proudly on the hood of every new Mack truck, the firm’s determination was unfailing. Today, Mack is an industry leader. Its tradition of designing and building the highest quality vehicles, focused entirely on meeting customer needs, is uncompromised. And it proudly concludes its first century with an ambitious Vision of its next.
