First American edition. The original woodblock prints were done by Hu Cheng Yen, a master of colour printing in China during the late 16th Century whose work has only seriously been examined since the 1940's. An important reference for collectors and scholars alike, this volume provides a brief history of polychrome woodblock printing in China during the end of the Ming Dynasty. There are twenty full page colour plates the size of the originals beautifully reproduced on paper specially manufactured for this edition with two of the plates embossed as the originals were. The book as a whole was designed by the author. The paper was specially manufactured by the Papierfabrik Biberist. The text was set by hand in Caslon old face and printed by Beorg Rentsch Söhne, Trimbach Olten. The facsimiles were printed in Photochrome offset by Art. Inst. Orell-Füssli, Zurich.
